Tips on Painting Your Bedroom

Tips on Painting Your Bedroom

Before you begin slathering your favorite color all over your bedroom walls, it would be good to first know some of the basic guidelines when it come to painting your bedroom. Your bedroom is not a part of the house that gets seen a lot by guests. It is your private retreat, so there is nothing wrong with being bold and creative, and experimenting with your wall color choices. However, there are three basic guidelines that would be good to follow to ensure that you will be satisfied with the outcome.

The first guideline has to do with the color family rule. For example, you have decided you want to paint your room blue. You should consider having decorative items in your bedroom that will match that precise shade of blue. This type of monochromatic scheme is actually quite simple to do, and therefore a popular method for most. So, if you are leaning toward a particular color for your walls, find somehow to incorporate that color into various items in your room, such as a lamp shade, bed comforter or pillows or even picture frames.

The second guideline we will call the "next door neighbor" rule. If you can picture a color wheel, then you can better understand what shades of color you should include in your bedroom. For example, say you like the color red. Looking at the colors on the color wheel next to red will give you a good idea of what would make a good color combination to complement red. Sticking with the red idea, we see that the colors orange and violet would go well. If blue is your preference, then the colors green and violet may be the direction you want to go. This color scheme is called the analogous color scheme.

The third guideline is called the Ying and Yang rule. This Chinese traditional belief suggests that there should be adequate Yin and Yang in the home. What this basically boils down to is that opposites of everything should be present, and this includes colors. Many people find this is their favorite method of choosing colors. Choosing opposite colors can create a harmonious environment that you will love. For example, the basic black and white combination is one that many love. Feel free to experiment with various dark and light shades of colors and decide which combination looks best in your bedroom.

These are the three general guidelines in creating a comfortable and relaxing haven inside your bedroom. Remember, be creative and you will surely have varying ideas on which colors should adorn your bedroom walls.
